Flight from Hell

“Flight from Hell” is a dramatic headline that is totally untrue. Now that I have your attention though, there were quite a few memorable moments.

Firstly there was the ‘random’ security check where every-time I travel I get selected. Not very random if you ask me. This time I also got a bonus pat-down which was a new (and unpleasant) experience for me.

Then j-street was trying to get through customs with a very unflattering passport photo. The lady at the counter was so shocked and impressed by the change, she shouted to her co-worker “Hey guy sitting next to me, check out this passenger!”. He had a good laugh too. J-street was called handsome so his ego survived intact.

The best bit though was the flight itself to Hong Kong. It is about 2:30am and everyone is sleeping (or trying to) but suddenly you could hear the sound of a dying cat. The sound dissipates, then 10 seconds later screaming! After the shock wears off you realise it is someone singing at the top of their lungs.

Welcome to the jungle we take it day by day
If you want it you’re gonna bleed but it’s the price to pay
And you’re a very sexy girl that’s very hard to please

In a half asleep state, you wonder if that even happened or some weird sick demented dream. You pull the blanket around and start to drift off… then suddenly!

In the jungle welcome to the jungle
Feel my, my, my serpentine
Ooh, I want to hear you scream

This continued for about 5 hours… Occasionally you would get a flight attendant politiley asking for him to be quiet, or not so politely another passenger yelling, “Shutup!”

What it all comes down to
Is that everything’s gonna be fine fine fine
’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving a high five
I feel drunk but I’m sober

And drunk he was. The other fun thing was who ever used my enterntainment system last jammed it in up-side-down. This meant that unlike everyone else who can use it like a normal remote control, I had to tilt my head and work out that left is up, up is right, right is down and down is left.

Ready for take off

Once we got to Hong Kong, we had some much needed coffee, bought some power adapters and just chilled in a half-asleep state. The Dragonair plane was much like our Jetstar, virtually a bus with wings. The only interesting thing was the air conditioning air was visible like a leaking gas pipe. Photos incoming. Also I alone was again ‘randomly’ selected to complete a survey on the airlines performance.

We finally arrive at Chengdu at around 1:30pm local time. Overall it wasn’t that bad, more sleep would have been good, but the food was great, entertainment was great (on the first leg, read a book on the second) and more importantly, the company I had was great.

More drama and excitement is continued from after we landed, but that will be continued in this post.
